/filer/tmp filesystems

/filer/tmp filesystems

Two filesystems are provided for temporary storage shared between machines in various clusters administered by LCSR. /filer/tmp1 provides ~6 TB of space to the faculty and research clusters. /filer/tmp2 provides ~3 TB of space to the faculty, research, grad and ilab clusters. They are both raided so it is unlikely, but not impossible, to lose your files there.

There are several things you should know about these filesystems:

/filer/tmp1 and /filer/tmp2 are not backed up. If a file there is deleted, corrupted, or otherwise lost, there is no way to get it back. If you would be seriously inconvenienced by loss of the files you put there, you should store your files somewhere else.

There are no quotas. We use quotas on other filesystems to ensure that excessive use on your part does not seriously impact other users sharing the filesystem. This means that if you can fill the entire filesystem. If that happens, no one else will be able to do any work. Usage on the filer is a matter of public record.

We reserve the right to delete your files. Should the filesystem become full, we will take steps to remedy the situation. First, we will attempt to contact users to police their own usage. Should that not regain enough space, we may have to compress or remove user files until a reasonable amount of space is available.

The filesystems will be periodically emptied. On the order of twice a year, all files on the /filer/tmp filesystems will be removed. This serves to remove files left and forgotten there as well as to remind users of the temporary nature of the filespace provided. And since the filesystems are not backed up, files which lived there before the re-initialization will not be recoverable.

Backed up space is obviously recommended for important data.
