What do you like best about this course?:
His real world analogies. Also, one could tell that he not only knew the course material excellently, but was passionate about it too. This reflected in his teaching which really generated interest in learning the material.
I learned how computers communicate over a network, and how communication over the internet works.
I like that there was a semester long project and that all lectures were available online for us to follow along. The lectures on line were very detailed, but from time to time would leave out a small nuance that made it really worth while to attend lecture.
The topic is very interesting and applicable to the real world.
Usually the textbook for a course is terrible, but this one wasn't too bad. Also I liked the project.
The professor is the best.
This course touches on a lot of very interesting topics.
If you were teaching this course, what would you do differently?:
make project easier
I would make the slides a bit shorter.
I don't think I would do anything differently.
Be more available for assistance with the Bittorrent project and update the assignment descriptions. Also, fix the sample solutions for exams, which were nearly always wrong. I think a La Piazza forum for this class would be extremely useful.
Instead of the Bittorent project, i would have given out a project that deals with HTTP to contact a remote server that has a database.
Remove phase 2 or 3 of project and extend time for each phase.
The complete disconnect between the lecture/professor and the project was disheartening. The BitTorrent project was by fair one of the hardest I've had in the CS department and I don't think the professor mentioned it once in class besides the first day. There was a complete lack of direction, help or leadership when it came to the project. We were just expected to do it. Many couldn't.
Our grades are very heavily influenced on a group project. Some students are unhelpful or uncooperative, which can make the project very difficult to complete.
In what ways, if any, has this course or the instructor encouraged your intellectual growth and progress?:
The course project was a bit torrent assignment. Although students had to do their own research on the bit torrent protocol, it was something very interesting to learn.
Provided an assignment that I use on a daily basis (Torrents) and it encouraged an interest in topic of internet technology.
to try more things on my own
It has taught me internet protocols I never knew about.
Lectures were insightful.
The instructor was very helpful and informative, even answering questions that were not on topic.
Other comments or suggestions::
Group is always an issue
If we had more professors like Professor Badri, we would have an excellent CS program where students are not only challenged but also encouraged to learn to meet these challenges. I'm sure it would pay off.
This is a general comment, not focused on this class in particular, but I would prefer if classes were only an hour long. I always find it hard to keep my attention in the last 2 minuets of class
Professor Badri is the best.
