Teaching and Professional Practice Faculty
The Department of Computer Science at Rutgers University invites applications for a position as Teaching Professor or Professor of Professional Practice in the area of Data Science. This position will primarily involve teaching and working with our MS programs.
The appointment is at the level of Assistant Professor, although exceptional candidates may be appointed at the rank of Associate or Full professor. Initial appointments will be for two years, and are renewable contingent on satisfactory performance and availability of funds. Reappointments are typically for multiple years.
The appointment will start September 1, 2018.
Data Science describes the field of scientific investigation that focuses on novel methodologies and algorithms to process, analyze, and synthesize data generated through a multitude of sources and sensors, and at different scales. Subareas that address the requirements of this field include machine learning, data mining, computational statistics, information retrieval, and scalable algorithms. Examples of applications iclude neuroscience and the understanding of the brain's functionality, medical informatics, health analytics, distributed decision making, cognitive science, computational linguistics, visual and image analytics, complex networks, smart cities, environmental understanding and monitoring, and the social sciences.

Responsibilities will include:
a. Teaching and continued curriculum development of our graduate Data Science classes in Massive Storage and Retrieval, Massive Data Mining, Data Interaction, Visual Analytics, Data Sense Making, and Scalable Algorithms.
b. Coordination of our Capstone project series, and their industry interactions.
c. Design of short term tutorials dedicated to Data Science topics of current interest.
d. Coordination of Data Science Workshops.
A PhD in Computer Science or closely related field is required, although candidates with an MS and substantial industry experience in software systems design and implementation are encouraged to apply and will be considered. At least one year of college-level teaching experience in Computer Science is strongly preferred.
