Congratulations to Professor Dimitris Metaxas, who has just received a new NIH grant for his project entitled “Innovative MRI-based Characterization of Cardiac Dyssynchrony.” The grant runs from April 2015 to March 2020 and is for an amount of $3,175118. A significant proportion of patients with cardiac dyssynchrony fail to positively respond to cardiac resynchronization therapy, as the clinical selection criteria are too broad. The project’s goal is to accurately characterize the complex shape and motion patterns of cardiac dyssynchrony, through new spatiotemporal classification algorithms applied to dynamic cardiovascular magnetic resonance images. The findings from the project are expected to further improve our understanding of cardiac dyssynchrony and the ability to predict its response to resynchronization therapy, potentially leading to new clinical guidelines.
