Congratulations to Professor Badri Nath and Ph.D. alumnus Dragos Niculescu (now a faculty member at Universitatea Politechnica Bucureşti, Romania) for winning the 2015 IEEE INFOCOM test-of-time award for their paper:
“Ad hoc positioning system (APS) using AOA,” IEEE INFOCOM 2003, by Dragos Niculescu and Badri Nath.

Here is the abstract from the original paper: “Position information of individual nodes is useful in implementing functions such as routing and querying in ad-hoc networks. Deriving position information by using the capability of the nodes to measure time of arrival (TOA), time difference of arrival (TDOA), angle of arrival (AOA) and signal strength have been used to localize nodes relative to a frame of reference. The nodes in an ad-hoc network can have multiple capabilities and exploiting one or more of the capabilities can improve the quality of positioning. In this paper, we show how AOA capability of the nodes can be used to derive position information. We propose a method for all nodes to determine their orientation and position in an ad-hoc network where only a fraction of the nodes have positioning capabilities, under the assumption that each node has the AOA capability.”

The IEEE INFOCOM Test of Time Paper Award is a new award that has been instituted from this year. It recognizes papers published between 10 to 12 years ago (a three-year window) in the INFOCOM proceedings that have been most cited and widely recognized to have a significant impact on the research community. For 2015, papers published in 2003 – 2005 INFOCOM proceedings were eligible.
The authors have been invited to attend the opening ceremony of the 2015 INFOCOM conference to be held in Hong Kong, where they will be presented this prestigious award during the opening session. Each author will receive an award plaque.

This is Professor Badri Nath’s second test-of-time award, having previously won such an award in 2003 for his 1992 VLDB paper on database queries in mobile, distributed environments.]]>
