The department has recently introduced a new “Data 101” course (CS142, or officially, 198:142, “Introduction to Data Science”) to respond to the growing interest in data analysis. In Spring 2016, this course will be taught by Prof. Tomasz Imielinski. The course targets non-CS majors, and seeks to equip them with the tools to answer questions such as:
- How to draw statistically valid conclusions from data?
- How to present your findings and argue your case (tell the story) with data (very useful in real world)
- Compete in “hands on” weekly data puzzles to find hidden patterns and use machine learning models to predict missing columns/values
