The department has recently introduced a new “Data 101” course (CS142, or officially, 198:142, “Introduction to Data Science”) to respond to the growing interest in data analysis. In Spring 2016, this course will be taught by Prof. Tomasz Imielinski. The course targets non-CS majors, and seeks to equip them with the tools to answer questions such as:

  1. How to draw statistically valid conclusions from data?
  2. How to present your findings and argue your case (tell the story) with data (very useful in real world)
  3. Compete in “hands on” weekly data puzzles to find hidden patterns and use machine learning models to predict missing columns/values
