Behind a large metal black door on the first floor of the Hill Center Annex on Busch Campus lies an unassuming classroom, providing students with a dynamic space to immerse themselves in hands-on technological projects. Known only mainly to those who frequent it, Room 120 is Hackerspace. Open Monday through Friday from 1 pm to 5 pm during the fall and spring semesters, Hackerspace has resources that enable students to design and build electronic devices, program small-computer devices, and engage in 3D printing endeavors.
Hackerspace was created by the Rutgers Computer Science Department in 2015. It is run by the Laboratory for Computer Science Research (LCSR) and managed by Comp Sci students. In the years since its inception, the innovative space has evolved into a space that allows students to get hands-on experience with its array of cutting-edge equipment.
Students have access to TurtleBot3 Waffle-Pi ROS Robot Platforms, which are instrumental in learning about robotics and autonomous systems. The Prusa XL printer allows students to create intricate prototypes and models, facilitating a deeper understanding of additive manufacturing processes. For those interested in the intersection of technology and music, a Roland OCTOPAD SPD-30 offers a platform to explore electronic percussion and sound design.
“The hackerspace brings new technologies to students who would not otherwise be able to experience them. The students suggest the equipment the hackerspace should acquire. They then mentor each other on its use as they learn about and document new acquisitions,” said LSCR’s Timothy Hayes.
Beyond individual exploration, Hackerspace plays a pivotal role in supporting computer science courses that benefit from its unique services. This integration ensures that theoretical knowledge gained in the classroom is complemented by practical application, enhancing the educational experience. Moreover, the space fosters a collaborative environment where students can collaborate, share ideas, and develop problem-solving skills essential for their future careers.
CS Senior and Hackerspace Lab Assistant Mohamad Khawam shared, "The hackerspace is a place for CS majors to come together and express themselves outside of class. Whether it's creating memories with friends or making small 3d prints, the hackerspace gave us the opportunity to create and explore. As the student lab assistant for two years, I’ve seen students go from knowing very little about technology to building projects they never imagined. The hackerspace has inspired CS majors to push their boundaries, apply their knowledge, and create amazing things!"
The Hackerspace at Rutgers University offers unparalleled opportunities for those eager to expand their technical horizons. Whether you're a student aiming to prototype a new invention, delve into robotics, or tinker with the latest tech tools, this space provides the resources and community to support your endeavors. We encourage all students and tech enthusiasts to visit Hackerspace, engage with its offerings, and become part of a vibrant community dedicated to innovation and learning.
