Dr. Mubbasir Kapadia
Mubbasir Kapadia is an Assistant Professor in the Computer Science department at Rutgers University, and the Director of the Intelligent Visual Interfaces Lab. Previously, he held positions at Disney Research Zurich and the Human Modeling and Simulation Lab at University of Pennsylvania. He received his PhD in Computer Science at University of California, Los Angeles. Kapadia’s research lies at the intersection of artificial intelligence, visual computing, and human-computer interaction, with a mission to develop intelligent visual interfaces to empower content creation for human-aware architectural design, digital storytelling, and serious games. He has published more than 100 journal and conference papers at premier venues in Computer Graphics, and Artificial Intelligence. Kapadia’s research is funded by DARPA and NSF, and through generous support from industrial partners including Disney Research, Autodesk Research, Adobe Research, and Unity Labs.

Abstract: My research lies at the intersection of artificial intelligence, visual computing, and human-computer interaction, with a focus on human modeling and simulation. My overarching career goal is to address key limitations and simplifying assumptions in virtual crowds, to make it an enabling technology for architectural design, urban simulation, and other forms of content creation. Towards this goal, I have helped lay the foundation for realism in virtual crowds, introduced new experimental paradigms for studying collective human behavior, developed model-free techniques for multi-agent learning from multi-modal data, and enhanced computer-aided design pipelines to seamlessly account for human behavior. My research contributions are actively used by researchers and practitioners all over the world and have helped establish a burgeoning multi-disciplinary research community in ``Human-Building Interaction''. In this talk, I will describe our ongoing work along three main thrusts: (a) computational modeling of the cognitive processes underlying how people inhabit spaces, (b) predicting the performance of buildings with respect to its inhabitants, and (c) integrating human-centric performance metrics within computer-aided design pipelines. These research objectives culminate towards the goal of democratizing human behavior simulation as a service and developing end-to-end solutions for intelligent human-aware building design.
