Biography: 

Abdeslam Boularias is an Assistant Professor in the Computer Science Department at Rutgers University. He received the engineering degree in computer science from the École Nationale Supérieure d’Informatique (ESI) in Algeria in 2004, the Master’s degree in computer science from University of Paris-Sud in France in 2005, and the Ph.D. degree from Laval University in Canada in 2010. From August 2010 to April 2013, he was a Research Scientist with the Empirical Inference Department at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Germany. From May 2013 to July 2015, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow and a Project Scientist at Carnegie Mellon University. His main research interests include planning under uncertainty, reinforcement learning, and robotics.

2019: NSF CAREER Award.

2019: Best Paper Award in Automation Finalist at the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA) in Montreal, Canada.

2015: Best Cognitive Robotics Paper Award at the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA) in Seattle, USA.

  • Summer 2019: Abdeslam Boularias receives the NSF CAREER Award, which comes with a grant of $535,896 for the project "RI: CAREER: Task-Oriented Model Identification for Robust Robotic Manipulation".
  • Spring 2019: Abdeslam taught the course Introduction To Artificial Intelligence (16:198:440) at Rutgers.
  • Fall 2018: Jingjin Yu, Kostas Bekris and Abdeslam Boularias organized the 7th Northeast Robotics Colloquium (NERC) at Rutgers University. The colloquium brings together the roboticists of the northeastern United States and Canada, in an event that is simultaneously a research meeting and a networking event.
  • Fall 2018: Jingjin Yu and Abdeslam Boularias receive a grant of $601,360 from GEM China for the project "Intelligent and High-Efficiency Recycling of Non-Ferrous Metals Through Computer Vision Driven Robotics".
  • Summer 2018: Abdeslam is co-organizing a Machine Learning Summer School (MLSS) in Algiers, Algeria. Check out the lecture on reinforcement learning and an example of Q-learning .
  • Spring 2018: Abdeslam taught the course Introduction To Artificial Intelligence (16:198:440) at Rutgers.
  • Spring 2018: Jingjin Yu, Kostas Bekris and Abdeslam Boularias receive a grant of $240,000 from JD.com, Inc. for the project "Configurable Hand for Intelligent Material Picking (CHIMP)".

  • Summer 2017: Abdeslam received a grant of $70,000 from General Dynamics under the Collaborative Technology Alliance Program, sponsored by the US Army Research Lab (ARL) .
