Professor, Dept. of Computer Science, University of California Santa Barbara. — Researcher in parallel and distributed systems, Internet search, and high performance scientific computing. Among many others, he served as area chair for the 33rd International Conference on Parallel Processing (2004), and in editorial capacity for the Journal of Computer Science and Technology, IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems, and the Journal of Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science. From 2000 to 2010, he was the Chief Scientist, Vice President of Search Engineering, and Senior Vice President for Ask.com, Ask Jeeves, and Teoma and he co-lead the research and development of ASK search engine, the fourth largest search engine in USA.
