- (5/11/2008) - Grades have been posted.
- (5/11/2008) - Your final exams have been graded (I will post the grades
tomorrow). The highest score was a 96 and the lowest score was a 40. The
score ranges are: 91-100: 2, 81-90: 4, 71-80: 4, 61-70: 1, 51-60: 3,
41-50: 1, 40: 1. The average was 71.8, and the standard deviation was
16.9.
- (5/7/2008): Upon popular request, here is a
set of tips to follow as you prepare for the
final exam.
- (5/6/2008): Several people have by now asked me whether details of
specific intrusion detection systems (e.g., NSM, DIDS, AAFID) that
were covered in the Network Security lecture are important for the
final. Answer: No, the details of these systems are not important
to understand. People have also asked me whether the details covered
in the chapter on Information Flow are important. Answer: Yes, the
details of both the compiler-based and execution based mechanisms
that we covered for this chapter are important.
- (5/5/2008): Midterm solutions available
here.
- (5/5/2008): I have posted Chaum's original paper on Mixes (this is part of
the syllabus for the final). The final exam will be cumulative: Roughly
40% of the exam will focus on pre-midterm material, and the remaining 60%
will focus on post-midterm material.
- (4/4/2008): The final exam for CS442 is scheduled for Friday May 9, 2008,
from 4:00pm-7:00pm, in ARC 107.
- (4/1/2008): LCSR has arranged to give each one of you normal shells on
osconsole. You are permitted to log in and do your assigments now, but
do not ssh into any other machines than the ones that you have been
assigned. If you break this rule and go to another machine, that
will be considered akin to breaking academic integrity, and will be
dealt with accordingly. Please note that LCSR maintains ssh logs
and can determine if your have misused your provileges. So don't
take the risk of misusing your privileges.

(3/23/2008): Readings for tomorrow's lecture have be posted. Though you are
not expected to read all the three papers before tomorrow's lecture, they
will be included in the syllabus for the final exam.

(3/23/2008): We've arranged for you to use VOSLab machines for Homework 2.
We've also verified that Problems 1-5 will work on these machines. Chih-Cheng
will explain the use of the VOSLab machines in the recitation hour on
3/24/2008.

(3/20/2008): We've found that the Cereal machines will not work for
Problems 3, 4, and 5 of Homework 2. (They will work for Homework 1 and 2,
however). We will shortly announce another platform for you to solve
Homework 2 on. However, you may continue to work on Problem 1 and 2 (candle
and sparkler) on the Cereal machines.
- (3/13/2008): The second homework assignment is now available
(Click here).
The actual Bomb and the page that displays the current status are both
password-protected. Please email either me or Chih-Cheng for the
login and password. This homework is due on 4/7/2008.
- (3/10/2008): Upon popular request, the third homework assignment will
be released before the spring break (watch this space for details).
You will have until 4/7/2008 to work on it. You can work in teams
of two if you'd like.
- (3/8/2008): The midterm score distributions are:
20-29: 1, 30-39: 6, 40-49: 3, 50-59: 2, 60-69: 2, 70-79: 2.
- (3/4/2008): Small change in schedule: In Wednesday's class, we will review
the midterm, complete material from last Wednesday's lecture, and cover
format string attacks. We will cover buffer overflow attacks on Monday.

Perhaps this FAQ might help you decide.
- (2/28/2008): Your exam will be a closed book exam. You are not allowed to
use class notes, cheat sheets, or the text book during the exam. The use
of laptops, cellphones, calculators and other electronic equipment during
the exam is prohibited. The syllabus is: Chapter 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9,
12 and class handouts. All the references assigned for each lecture are
fair game for the mid term.
- (2/23/2008): We will have a 45 minute review session in class on 2/27.
We will discuss the problems from Section 8.7 (pages 120-122) and from
Section 9.8 (pages 142-143).
- (2/22/2008) - There will be no recitation session on
Monday 3/3/2008, following your mid-term exam.
- (2/18/2008) - Your midterm on 3/3/2008 will be based upon all
the material up to and including the lecture on 27/2.
- (2/14/2008) - For Monday's (2/18/2008) lecture, please print
out and read the Kerberos paper before you come to
class.
- (2/11/2008) - "Lecture 6 handout", containing the material covered in
today's lecture, is available online. You can access it from any machine
on the .rutgers.edu domain. I have also uploaded "Lecture 5
handout".
- (2/9/2008) - Homework 1 will be distributed in class on 2/11/08.
- (2/9/2008) - Your mid term exam will be held on 3/3/08 during class hours.
- (2/5/2008) - I will be out of town on 2/25/2008 Our TA,
Chih-Cheng Chang, has agreed to teach class in my absense.
- (1/27/2008) - For just this week, I will have office hours on
Thursday 1/31, from 6:30pm-7:30pm instead of Wednesday.
