CS323 - Spring '04. CURRENT ANNOUNCEMENTS
1. January 15, 2004: No recitations during the week of January
19-23.
2. January 22, 2004: I posted HW1, the first homework assignment
which will be discussed in recitations
next week.
3. January 28, 2004: The recitation rooms for Thursday recitations
(sections 8 and 9) were INCORRECT
on the syllabus. Actually, section 8
meets in Scott 206 and Section 9 in Scott 102. The syllabus now has
the correct information.
4. January 28, 2004: You may want to download Homework 1 again. I
made a small change in problem 5e
to correct a misprint.
5. February 7, 2004: Homework 3 (practice problems) are
available.
6. February 15, 2004: Homework 4 is available.
7. February 22, 2004: The midterm exam will be on March 23, after
spring break.
8. February 28, 2004: Homework 6 (practice problems) is
available. Solutions for HW2, HW5 and HW6 are posted.
9. (**) March 10, 2004: IMPORTANT!! The midterm date is changed from
March 23 to Thursday, March 25.
10. March 10, 2004: I corrected an error in the HW6 solutions.
11. March 10, 2004: I posted some interesting practice problems
("How to compute A-inverse efficiently").
There is also an interesting
programming exercise that I may later assign.
12. March 10, 2004: Solutions to HW4 are available.
13. March 22, 2004: You should bring handouts 4a ("examples for
A-inverse...") and 6 ("Systems with large roundoff...") to class.
14. March 22, 2004: If you are in section 9, you may want to try
to attend one of the other recitations this week, to see worked
examples of LUP factorization before the midterm.
15. March 22, 2004: In preparation for the midterm, Yi Jin, TA for
Section 9, will give the Thursday, March 25 recitation tomorrow,
March 23, at
9PM, in Scott 102 (or, if that is occupied, in a room to be announced).
16. March 22, 2004: You may use a page of prepared notes in the
midterm (both sides).
17. March 23, 2004: Tonights 9PM recitation (to augment/replace
Thursdays) will be in Scott 104.
18. (**) March 23, 2004: IMPORTANT!! The course web page had the
WRONG FINAL EXAM DATE, the one for T,Th 7th period
classes. We are 8th
period and our final is Tuesday, May 11, 2004 from 8-11PM.
19. March 24, 2004: Handout 4b gives pseudocode for LUP factorization.
20. March 25, 2004: The Computer Science Department is having its OPEN HOUSE
in the CORE building on Friday March 26.
There is a very interesting
program. You should make every effort to drop in.
21. April 7, 2004: I posted some solutions to Homework 7.
22. April 9, 2004: I posted the midterm and some solutions.
23. April 9, 2004: HOMEWORK 7 will be due in class on THURSDAY,
April 15. Homework 8 is posted.
24. April 19, 2004: I posted Homework 9 (practice problems on
minimax approximation and Tchebycheff interpolation. There are
practice problems on least squares in HW10 and in a special least
squares file. The computer assignment is posted as well.
25. April 22, 2004: Bring handout 8 on Chebycheff interpolation
and review sheet 4, the course notes on differentiation and
integration.
26. April 22, 2004: The computer assignment is due at my office
(Hill 417) by 5PM, Monday May 3. NO ELECTRONIC SUBMISSIONS.
27. April 23, 2004: There is a new (and improved) Review Sheet 3,
course notes on polynomial approximation. It has a new section
on
minimax approximation. Please point out errors/misprints.
28. April 29, 2004: The COMPUTER ASSIGNMENT IS NOW DUE by
Tuesday, MAY 4 at 5PM at my office. I have office hours from
3-5PM on
May 3 and May 4, for help with the assignment, or anything else.
29. May 1, 2004: It is OK to submit the COMPUTER ASSIGNMENT at the
REVIEW CLASS.
30. May 2, 2004: I revised Course Notes IV on Differentiation and
Integration. The section on Gaussian Quadrature is expanded.
31. May 3, 2004: Notes on Differentiation and Integration are
revised again.
32. May 4, 2004: Computer assignments are now late. I can still
accept them with some deduction until Thursday afternoon.
33. May 6, 2004: Here is a list of topics you
should know for the final (and as .pdf).
34. May 9, 2004: (i) I clarified the least squares part in topics,
above. (ii) The graded computer HW should be available at my office Tuesday
afternoon.
35. May 10, 2004: I made some small, obvious changes to the exam
topics.
36. May 11, 2004: In response to several questions, the exam is
in our regular classroom.
