The Laboratory for Computer Science Research Computing Facility (LCSRCF) has multiple positions open for student UNIX operators. These positions will be working primarily with the Division of Computer and Information Sciences (DCIS) Faculty, Undergraduate and Graduate instructional facilities. LCSRCF Operations also provides the same UNIX support to the Math and DIMACS Departments.

At LCSRCF, the UNIX operator position is divided amongst several categories of responsibilities, including, but not limited to, operations and user support. Operations support relates to actual computer operations such as system backups, file restores and printer support. User support consists primarily of responding to "help" mail from users, but includes any reasonable means available to resolve users problems. Students are encouraged to participate in the organization. LCSRCF has a history of students who actively participate in the organization's activities, and much of the hardware, software, and policy in use at the organization has been influenced or even created entirely by students.

These are some skills that are critical to the successful UNIX operator:

The following programming experience would be very helpful, but is not required: Applicants do not need to be Computer Science majors. Students from other disciplines are encouraged to apply as well. Due to the various responsibilities of the UNIX operator position, the amount of training involved is time consuming, involving approximately 5 weeks of 10 hours per week. For this reason, consideration for this position can be given only to those students who will have student status for at least 2 full semesters, after training. ALL freshmen, sophomores and juniors are encouraged to apply.

The LCSRCF Operation runs 24x7x52. We are in operation through both semesters and all breaks. Students are expected to work a minimum of 8 to 10 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters, with more hours per week likely available. Up to 30 hours per week are available during winter and summer breaks. Hours are flexible, and based on each students schedule of classes. Starting pay is $9.20/hour. You will learn a lot.

Drop off resumes to Mark Rinehart, CoRE Bldg. Room 235. Resumes should address all of the above aptitudes. You must be a currently-enrolled Rutgers student to be considered for these positions.
