Learned Representations in AI

Representation: What is it?  What is it for?

What is it that we are representing?  Knowledge?

What does it mean for a system to *know* something?
 * Answer questions?
 * Behave accordingly?
 * Specific data structure?

Examples:
 * By a show of hands: Do you know my son's name?
   Someone who doesn't know needs to verify that someone who does know
   does know.
 * Do you know the way to San Jose?
 * What is this (shape)?  Which way is it going?
