Michael Littman's January 2001 Puzzles

1. DIGITAL LOGIC

These days, everything I buy seems to have a built-in digital clock. I think it's pretty neat, except when I have to move the clocks ahead an hour or back an hour for daylight savings time. Power failures are even more frustrating, because all my clocks behave differently when the power comes back on. The clock on my refrigerator resets itself to 12:00 and keeps time from there, while the one on my microwave continues from the time at which power went off. My coffee maker has a battery backup, so it isn't affected by power failures.

I left for work one morning, verifying that the clocks were all synchronized. I called home at 1pm to check for messages on my answering machine, but when I returned home at the end of the day, I discovered that my clocks read 6:45, 5:30, and 5:15. When was the power out and what time did I get home?
