From the Chairman

by Dr. Tomasz Imielinski

The spring semester is off to a fast start, and we are finishing the preparations for our 2nd Annual Open House to be held on February 13. This will also mark the official opening of the Internet Technology Initiative (ITI) which includes an educational component - the Internet Institute. This new initiative brings Internet Technology to a forefront at Rutgers University. The initiative is funded by the University SROA program, and the goal of this particular program is to make Rutgers a primary place to study Internet Technology. (Additional information is available on www.internet.rutgers.edu)

The Department has already started offering the Internet technology Ceritificate to the computer science majors (This program was designed by the Department during most of last year). The classes will be held in Hill Center in a wing now designated to the Department of Computer Science. These rooms were obtained through a comprehensive agreement with both the Math and Statistics Departments. During the past fall semester, the rooms were renovated and now house the 21 high end SUN workstations which were provided as a gift from SUN Microsystems. The class rooms/laboratories located in this wing will be used to teach upper level undergraduate courses in internet technology and systems as well as related graduate courses.

The department is currently in the process of a comprehensive redesign of the entry level undergraduate courses. The courses are moving to a Java platform. These new offerings, together with the already offered Internet certificate, will provide a modern, up-to-date undergraduate curriculum. A redesign and expansion of the graduate program offerings is also in the process.

Included in the plan of the ITI is the establishment of links with high school programs in the state. This would include assisting school districts in creating their programs in internet technology.

In addition to the academic certification, the Internet Institute will offer two professional certificates. These two new professional certificates will offer comprehensive programs on Internet Technology and on technology management. Also, ITI will sponsor a technology challenge which is a year long project course. The best projects resulting from this challenge will be offered assistance for possible commercialization.

Due to the tremendous interest demonstrated by industry, the Department will launch an industrial liaison and advisory program called, "Rutgers Computer Forum" The first meeting is scheduled for March 6th.
