WICSE -- Women in Computer SciencE -- is a forum of undergraduate
and graduate women in the Department of Computer Science who meet on a
regular basis to provide a supportive environment for women
students. These meetings foster informal activities among students,
faculty, and computing professionals. This group was organized in November 1996 by the women faculty in the department, Kate Goelz, Barbara Ryder, Diane Souvaine, Suzanne Stevenson, and Ann Yasuhara, meeting with some women CS majors. On Monday evening, February 17, 1997, WICSE held a Career Night. The speakers included: Ms. Forough Ghahramani from DEC; Ms. Galia Merhav from Lucent Technologies; Ms. Lois Rodgers from Spatial Labs; Ms. Jeanette LaRosa from AT&T; Ms. Debjani Deb from MIT; and Ms. Mela Radetich from Salomon Brothers. Ms. Deb, Merhav, and Radetich are all recent graduates of the department; Ms. Rodgers holds an MS degree from the graduate program.
The second meeting of this semester was on Friday, April 18, 1997. This was a meeting to encourage younger women students contemplating becoming a CS major to meet older women who are nearing the end of their studies in CS. Informal networking proceeded over pizza and soda. Both of these WICSE meetings had an attendance of about 30 people.
The affiliated women faculty held monthly student/faculty luncheons at Davidson Dining Hall during this past semester, as well. At these informal occasions, faculty and students discussed activities of interest for the group and relevant questions about CS study of interest to the women students.
