CS 545: Distributed Systems - Spring 2007

Overview
This is an advanced graduate course in distributed systems. The target audience
is graduate students who
are interested in systems research.
This semester the course is based on research papers. We
will discuss selected papers
in distributed systems with a special focus on file systems, mobile
systems and systems security from top-tier 2005-2007 conferences (SOSP,
OSDI, ASPLOS, FAST, NSDI, SIGCOMM, Mobisys, Mobicom, Usenix Technical, Usenix
Security, Eurosys). Each week, students will present papers on a
specific topic and lead discussions.
Prerequisite
Students should have taken a graduate or undergraduate
operating systems course and must
be familiar with basic concepts of computer architecture and networking.
Expected Work
Students will be required to:

prepare in-class presentations and lead discussions.

submit critiques of the papers being discussed each week and contribute to class discussion.

complete a small research-oriented project.
Grading
Midterm(30%), Final(30%), Project(20%), Critiques (10%), Class Participation (10%).
