Advising

All CS majors will be advised by an Undergraduate Advisor in the Division of Computer and Information Sciences. Undergraduate majors in Computer Science are not assigned to a permanent advisor. Instead, there is a committee of professors to whom students are encouraged to come to seek advice. It is important that students consult with the advisors regularly to make sure that they are making progress toward satisfying the departmental degree requirements, and also to see if their course selection is consistent with their carreer goals. (Some courses are especially recommended for students contemplating graduate school; some courses are especially valuable for particular types of positions in industry, etc.)

Students should also check with their undergraduate colleges (Cook, Douglass, Livingston, Rutgers, University) to make sure they are making progress to satisfy their other degree requirements. If you have questions concerning transfer credits, prerequisite overrides, admission to the major, etc., please check with your undergraduate college first to get the proper forms, and then contact the undergraduate secretary, (732-445-2001 ext. 2001), to have them processed by the department. The Undergraduate Secretary of the department is located in Room 390 of the Hill Center.

We encourage all students to consult the description of CS undergraduate program as a first place to seek answers to their questions.

Advisors will hold advising hours on several campuses at the Advising Center or Office of Instruction Schedules are posted with the CS secretarial staff (Hill 390), and on the CS Advising Office Bulletin board (adjacent to Hill 353), and with appropriate Deans. During pre-registration and drop/add periods, students should see an Advisor during (posted) scheduled hours; it is amazing how many students who "know what I'm doing" or "just need a signature" would fail to graduate, or are taking courses they do not want to in the mistaken belief that they must.
