Purchasable Disk Space

Researchers who need more than the quota provided to faculty and students can buy disk space from LCSR. Please contact Maryann Holtsclaw to arrange for billing and payment. She will then contact Don Watrous or Rob Tuck to arrange for the space to be allocated.

LCSR supports two types of purchasable disk storage. Both are sold in units of 10GB for a period of one year. Space may be bought for multiple years. Changes based upon experience and usage can be made quarterly.

Restorable Space:

Loss of data due to hardware failure is extremely unlikely. Files can be restored as far back as 60 days. All data resides on a disk array in the LCSR machine room. Monthly copies of the data are kept offsite for disaster recovery.

For each 1 GB of online restorable space LCSR must provide 4GB of disk space in the background in order to support the 60 day restore capability. Therefor, to maintain 1 GB of online space 5GB of disk space must be purchased.

The cost of 10GB of online storage is $80 per year (i.e., $1.60 per GB per year for 50GB).

Backup Space:

This provides space for offline copies of online files. All data resides on a disk array in the LCSR machine room.

Copies are not directly accessible as online files but can be made available within one business day.

The cost of 10GB of Backup disk is $16 per year (i.e., $1.60 per GB per year for 10GB).

The amount of backup disk space needed to back up a given amount of online storage will depend on a user's usage patterns and retention requirements. Backup schedules and retention policies will be designed to meet individual needs. Usage and retention patterns will be monitored and published. Owners of machines to be backed up may have to coordinate with LCSR staff to install necessary backup software on these machines.

Here is an example.
