Introduction
This document will take you step by step
in setting up a CanoScan D660U scanner to allow for a one touch scanning
directly outputting PDF document files.
One touch scanning will only allow one page PDF documents to be
created. To combine multiple PDF
document pages into one PDF document you will need to use the Adobe
Acrobat. This document does not
discuss this process. Please be
aware, the following steps in this document will change the default settings
for the Canon ScanGear Toolbox settings.
These instructions are for the Windows 2000, but the manner of setting
this up for Windows XP is almost the same. If at any time options on your terminal differ from what is
displayed here, but it is not explicitly identified as something to change,
please make the appropriate changes anyway.
A CanoScan D660U scanner with
a front touch button and appropriate drivers installed; The Canon ScanGear Toolbox CS
program; Adobe Acrobat 5.0 with
Distiller installed; and a printer
device on the PC set up to use a PDF port and the Adobe PS print driver.
Step 1) Log into the Windows 2000 machine.
Once logged in,
the “ScanGear Toolbox CS program should appear on the desktop. If not, click on the start menu in the
lower left hand corner, select Programs->Canon Scan Gear Toolbox CS
2.5->Canon ScanGear Toolbox CS 2.5.

Step 2) Click on Settings Box and a new window
should appear.
Fig. 2

Step 3) Select the Copy tab to change the copy
setting options.
The menu will switch to look
like Figure 3.

Step 4)
A)
Check on the Show this button on
Toolbar box.
B)
Unselect Multiple copies.
C)
Change Image type: to Black and
White.
D)
Change Image quality (Resolution): to Super high.
E)

selected the menu should look like Figure 4.

Step 6) Change the Name: of
the printer to LCSR PDF Distiller.
Note: By default Paper Size, Paper Source
and Orientation should be as shown in Figure 5. If not, set the following: Paper Size to Letter, Paper Source to Automatically
Select and Orientation to Portrait.
Note: If the LCSR PDF Distiller printer
name does not appear you can either choose Acrobat Distiller or add a new
printer and create the LCSR PDF Distiller printer. Using Acrobat Distiller as your printer will set the
default Save location to be your local Desktop. The default Save location for the LCSR PDF Distiller
printer is \\Lcsrserver\.Server\All
Shared\LCSR PDF Distiller Ouput\.
If you do not have permission to save files in that directory, it will
try to save the file in the My Documents folder. If you choose to change the default Save location to
something else or do not have the LCSR PDF Distiller as a printer name
option, you will have to create a new printer. So long as Acrobat 5.0 is installed, this can be done very
similar to the instructions in the DCIS document Setting Up a Postscript
Printer Queue to Print to DCIS Printers on MS Windows 2000. When at step 4 in that document, choose
Create a new port, and select PDF port as the type. Instead of step 5, a window will appear
in which you select the default Save folder. In step 6 select the Adobe PS print driver. If this is not on your computer
download it from http://www.adobe.com or
select any postscript (PS) equivalent print driver.

Step 7) Click the
Properties… button once the LCSR PDF Distiller Printer Name has been
selected.

Document Properties window will open as in Figure 7.

defaults, but may have been changed.

Fig. 19

Step 3) The LCSR PDF
Distiller Printer will print to the
\\Lcsrserver\.Server\All
Shared\LCSR PDF Distiller Ouput\ folder by default. If you do not have permissions to write
to this folder, it you select the My Documents folder by default. At this time you can also change the
location to save the file to anything you wish.
Fig. 19

Step 4) The default name to
save the file will be ScanGear Toolbox CS. Select an appropriate name. DO NOT save the file as ScanGear Toolbox CS. This name is will in all to likely-hood
be written over by accident at one time or another. In this example, the file is saved as PDFTestPage.
Fig. 20

Step 5) You may see the
window in Figure 20 appear after Step 4.
Either, make sure you are not overwriting a file you or someone else
needs and select Yes, or select No and change the name of the file you are
trying to save it as.

Step 6) You may also see the

happens even if you are NOT trying to save the file under the name ScanGear
Toolbox CS.pdf. Check the file

the configuration section, setup 6, above the default directory is \\Lcsrserver\Server\All

file. Select NO. Rename the ScanGear Toolbox CS.pdf
file in the directory to something else.
Then restart the scan from Step 1.
B) If you feel that you or someone else does not need
this file. Select Yes. This will allow you to proceed with the
following step. After you are done. Delete the ScanGear Toolbox CS.pdf
file in your save directory.
Fig. 22

Figure 22 will
appear briefly.
Fig. 23

Then 2 icons will appear in
your lower right taskbar. A small
printer and an Adobe Acrobat icon.
When they disappear, proceed to the next step.
Fig. 24

Step 7) At this point the
file will be saved as the file PDFTestPage.pdf, or whatever you chose to call
it, in the \\Lcsrserver\.Server\All
Shared\LCSR PDF Distiller Ouput\ directory, or another directory if you
changed the default settings.
Adobe acrobat should automatically open up on the screen. If Acrobat does not automatically
start, look in the directory \\Lcsrserver\Server\All
Shared\LCSR PDF Distiller Output\ and manually open the file you saved by
double clicking on it. Verify with
Acrobat Reader that your file was made successful
Fig. 25

You are done. You can now do with the file, whatever
you please.
