Dragon Features

The Dragon mail system is feature rich. It supports practically all standard mail protocols  and is more advanced than the standard sendmail based mailservers bundled in Unix and Linux OS.  It is basically a complete messaging system with support for PBX, VoIP etc.. However at DCS we only use it for its mail features.

Amongst the important features beside the standard  POP3 or IMAP protocol, mail services that are currently running on Dragon are:

-WebMail interface via: http://dragon.rutgers.edu. The purpose of the webmail interface is to allow users to read email from practically anywhere in the world simply by using an Internet browser. All access to the web interface are done via Secure Socket Layer (SSL) protocol.

- Alternative Outgoing  SMTP ports.
In an effort to limit spam, many ISPs are blocking the sendmail port and forcing its customers to use an ISP approved mail server only. This moved will inconvenience many of our laptop users because it requires users to change mail client settings for outgoing mail depending on where they are sending their email from.  The alternate ports on dragon are: 2500 (automatic SSL/TLS negotiation)  and 2525 (for no negotiation, SSL only).  Setup your mail client outgoing server to send to one of these port if your ISP is blocking out going mail.

- Automatic blacklist detection. To reduce the amount of spam,  email  from known spammer sites is automatically rejected. We use blacklist site  sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org to provide up to datelists of spammer sites.  Email that is not from these sites is still received and processed for spam and virus content. For statistics see: http://report.rutgers.edu/mrtg under Mail Stats.

- Virus checks. All email less or equal to 1Mb in size arriving for users@cs.rutgers.edu are checked for viruses. If a virus is found a warning message is sent to messeges receipient. The virus scanner we used is from an open source project called  ClamAV that is interfaced with Communigate Pro. The signatures file on this virus scanner is updated periodically. For statistics see: http://report.rutgers.edu/mrtg under Mail Stats.

- SpamTagging. All email less or equal to 2Mb in size arriving  for users@cs.rutgers.edu are  evaluated for its spam content. Mail considered as spam is tagged as such in its header so they can easily be filtered. We use open source software called: SpamAssassin along with Razor plugins, Bayesian rules and additional blacklist checks. Just like virus detection, there are new types of spam all the time. As such, we make sure that our  spam rules  are updated periodically. Dragon users who created their accounts themselves get the spam feature turned on automatically during account creation. Other Computer Science users can utilize the tags set by our spam filter by setting up rules. More details on these rules available at: http://please.rutgers.edu/show/howto/ under the  mail related section. For statistics see: http://report.rutgers.edu/mrtg under Mail Stats.

- Personal Home Page. Dragon servers also  run webserver software. User can store all  webfiles like html, gif, jpeg etc. into dragon and totally migrate his/her homepage to dragon.  For more info on how to set this up, see: http://dragon.rutgers.edu/Guide/WebFiles.html

- Mailing List. Dragon Mail system support subscription based mailing lists. Any CS Faculty/Staff and CS Graduate Students organization who would like to have a mailing list created can request with help@cs.rutgers.edu by sending the Name of the List. Once the mailing list is approved and created, list owner should learn on how to maintain and configure the mailing list which is available at http://dragon.rutgers.edu/Guide/LIST.html#Subscription.
