Title: 1st Quarterly R&D Status Report Author: Saul Amarel Date: December, 1993 Abstract: The Hypercomputing and Design (HPCD) project started officially on October 13, 1993. This report covers the first three months of the project. Our proposal for HPCD was submitted to ARPA on May 15, 1992; and much of our planning for the project took place in late '91. Despite the two-year interval between planning and actual beginning of the project, we were able to create during this reporting period an initial momentum, which in terms of people participation and enthusiasm, establishment of collaborative links, and development of ideas and technical plans - is already moving the project in the direction that we envisioned in the proposal. Basically, much of the present period was devoted to "getting the project off the ground", i.e., to formulating updated technical plans, and to establishing updated guidelines for research collaborations. To provide some background and context for the technical progress during this first reporting period, we are also reporting on some closely related work, which was done by HPCD investigators in the months preceding the start of the project and which is based on ideas that are presented in the proposal and that are expected to provide starting points for work in the project.
