The Right Way to Define Privacy

Lila Fontes, Université Paris Diderot

Faculty Host: Eric Allender

Abstract

There is a long history of the study of privacy in the context of communication complexity. Perfect privacy is well understood, but unfortunately impossible for most functions. This unattainability motivates a relaxation to approximate privacy.

In a relaxed setting, the meaning of "privacy" depends on many factors, and has many definitions. In this talk, I'll give some motivating examples, then examine and compare the (many) definitions of privacy. Information theory will be a useful tool. The talk will be self-contained, with the goal of persuading the audience that one particular definition of privacy is the most useful definition for future research.
