DNS entries are required and necessary for the netowrk to run properly. Connecting a machine to the network without proper registration can cause network slowness for your machine and possibly others. A valid DNS host entry assigns a unique IP address and hostname to your machine. It also has a record of the machine type, OS type, location, who is responsible for the machine and where any email for that machine should be delivered. Below is a listing of the information we need in order to process any DNS requests. Please email this information to help@cs.rutgers.edu

1) Check to see if the hostname you wish to use is available...
     Unix/Linux system - type /usr/local/bin/host
Windows system - type nslookup in a command.com window

2) DNS entries have the following required fields that need to be emailed to help@cs.rutgers.edu

Hostname - The name that you want your machine to be called.
RP -             The name of the person responsible for the machine. Usually a faculty member
MX -           The location where email should be directed. [mail.cs.rutgers.edu]
