Seeking motivated individual wishing to enter the Computer Systems Support field.

Hours:
LCSR operations runs 24x7x52 which includes both semesters and all breaks. Student Computing Staff are expected to work a minimum of 8 to 10 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters, with more hours per week likely available depending on scheduling. New hires must work a majority of their time between 9am-6pm, Monday-Friday to allow training. Additional hours per week may be worked over winter and summer break. Hours are flexible, and based on each student's schedule of classes.
Wage:
Starting $9-$12/hour.
Experience and Skills:
No skills officially required, as most skills will be learned on the job. Guided instruction will be given, but the new hire must be able to learn on their own through sources provided. The following would be helpful, but are not required:
  • Familiarity with UNIX or Linux Operating Systems and commands
  • Familiarity with Windows
  • Basic computer networking knowledge.
  • Basic web publishing skills.
  • Simple scripting (such as Bash, Perl, or PHP)
  • Web Authoring, HTML, CSS, javascript, etc...
  • More advanced programming, C, C++, Java
College Enrollment:
Applicants MUST be enrolled full-time in Rutgers University to apply. Applicants do not need to be Computer Science majors. Students from other disciplines are encouraged to apply as well. Consideration for this position can be given only to those students who will have student status for at least 2 full semesters, after training. ALL freshmen, sophomores and juniors are encouraged to apply.
Overview:

The Laboratory for Computer Science Research (LCSR) is currently looking for a Student Computing Staff member. This position will be working primarily with the Department of Computer Science (DCS) Faculty, Undergraduate and Graduate instructional facilities. LCSR also provides some computing support to the Math and DIMACS Departments.

At LCSR, the Student Computing Staff Position is divided amongst several categories of responsibilities, including, but not limited to, operations and user support. Operations support relates to actual computer operations such as system backups, file restores and printer support. User support consists primarily of responding to "help" mail from users, but includes any reasonable means available to resolve users problems.

In addition to operations and user support, Student Computing Staff will be given computing projects that range from system administration to programming. Skills for such projects will be learned on the job (See the Skills section for more details). Projects may include...

  • Documenting current and new procedures, policies, and available resources. 1st level help desk response.
  • Debugging, enhancing, optimizing and rewriting pre-existing code.
  • Installing and testing new operating systems.
  • Installing and testing new software.
  • Basic scripting and programming for administrative benefits.
  • User Testing.
  • Information searching, gathering and analysis.
  • Physical labor may be required on occasion.
  • Much, much, more...

In the future, Windows operating systems tasks may also become relevant.
