Modern computing has made substantial progress towards enabling complete user mobility, but it has not yet fully achieved this goal and there are many important problems left unsolved. Under this theme, we are working to identify new problems and solve existing problems in mobile computing, by developing novel systems composed of both mobile and infrastructure components.
The first system we propose is called Horatio. Horatio aims to improve the performance of infrastructure-based mobile computing systems, (e.g., Internet Suspend/Resume), to reduce the time overhead associated with retrieving and committing a user's VM-encapsulated personal computing state. To achieve this, we have built a system that utilizes both smart phones and infrastructure components to reduce delays to within human-tolerable ranges. This project is a collaboration with Professor Mahadev Satyanarayanan from Carnegie Mellon University.

The second system we propose, called Working Set-Based Access Control (WSBAC), is a novel network file system access control scheme. Today, enterprises face the difficult task of providing mobile access to their users, while users utilize personal devices to support their mobile work habits. Through WSBAC, we propose a novel form of access control for network file systems to protect against malware residing on personal devices (e.g., home PCs, personal hand-helds, smart phones), which further restricts network file systems discretionary access control systems by limiting a user's access to her most needed files, her working set. To accomplish this, WSBAC utilizes infrastructure components that monitor user network file system accesses from trusted devices to extract per user working set summaries, and uses the working set summaries to enforce the WSBAC policy for accesses from untrusted devices.
